"A Grammar of Form"
Painting by artpaws (Rich) who is also my friend and my step dad.
from his website http://artpausegallery.homestead.com/
'It is my thesis that art is an absolutely typical, commonly shared , and even necessary activity of real people. It has something to do with touching something deeper, mysterious, even disturbing, in our awareness of what it means to be alive, to be here in this world. In this, it is closer to the investigations of theoretical physicists and the practical lives of monks and of gardeners and of musicians than is commonly thought. And as with those other functioning members of an integrated society, the investigations of true artists may become like sweet rain and rich soil to enrich the lives of the people around them. What is "disturbing" in art should have to do with those areas of our lives in which we have become frozen or deadened to a higher vision, not those areas in which we are at one with each other, our families and friends....
'I reject the notion that artists are special, "god"-driven bad boys, who have some license to offend and disturb, or who constitute a class whose mysterious thoughts and operations are necessarily incomprehensible, or who have a god-given right to be funded by the public whom they can then hold in disdain...
'I believe that it is demonstrable that "art" has its roots in the sacred in the distant past. For this reason, artists even today think themselves endowed with spiritual power, but that has not been true for the most part for a thousand year. It is still a possibility, but one that will only be realized as we delve humbly into our humanity and shared experience, and look once again with awe into the mystery of being. Then, once again, artist and society can be whole, working together in healthy partnership and mutual respect.
'Many call themselves artists, because they make things that society calls art. I too make such things. But here I am speaking of art as a way, a process of minding the world. As such, it should be of great interest even to business and industry in their search for new products, new & more efficient ways of doing things.......'
