Syd Barrett's Peel Album
co-counder of Pink Floyd
"Shine on You crazy Diamond" from "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, 1974 (Gilmour, Waters, Wright)
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. Shine on You crazy Diamond. Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. Shine on You crazy Diamond. You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon. Shine on You crazy Diamond. Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light. Shine on You crazy Diamond. Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!
Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far. Shine on You crazy Diamond. Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there. Shine on You crazy Diamond. And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph, and sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser, come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from a(n offical) Pink Floyd website ("Echoes") on how this was written:
"Rick Wright:
"We filled wine glasses, running our fingers around the rims and tuned them to sharps and flats. We spent hours and hours getting a whole octave - then we played with the faders on the mixing desk - blending tones together to create chord sequences. Live we used a tape and click track. We spent hours experimenting.
"Dave played a very simple line, a four-note riff, everyone said 'what's that?' and that's how the song came about.
"Everyone knows the story of how Syd turned up during the recording of 'Shine On'. We hadn't seen him for five or six years.
"It was about Syd. Lyrically it works extremely well. It's my favourite lengthy piece. It has a beautiful flow, the way it links together. I love it.
"There's not a single arrangemnt or structure I want to change. maybe some of the mixing or vocal inflections. It's my number one piece."
