Virupaksha Temple, Pattadakal, in Karnataka, India.
Call it the crucible of Indian architecture. Pattadakal was the site of coronations between 7th-9th centuries. A few days back you had a glimpse of one of the early temples in Aihole from 4th-8th centuries; Badami overlapped as the next seat of power (6th-8th c.), to be followed by this magnificent center - now a World Heritage protected listing - predating Hampi (13th-16th c.) by several centuries.
You could refer to this sculpture as portrait snap-shot of a family much revered by devout Hindus... with Shiva or Shankar as the head, Parvati, his consort, and son Ganesh (beheaded by his own father due to a minor misunderstanding), whose head was then replaced by that of an elephant at the behest of his same "Papa"!
I'm adding this on... I may be mistaken about the kid... this kid here, could be the other son, Skanda, aka Kartikeya... foster-nursed by the Pleiades. This one gets even better... Kartikeya is the God of Battle. He is six-headed, has several attributes, mounts a peacock! Just read this info by accident, on this webpage... in case you'd like to look at more pix on the subject, or read some interesting stuff. I just chanced upon this info and site. :) The pix on FotoAmigo are mine... some of the shots on the following site are great! Some of mine are better (wink!) :-) http://www.art-and-archaeology.com/india/glossary1.html#kar ttikeya |
