Male House Finches

First visitors to the bird feeders Derrick hung for me two days ago. The feeders are in the backyard behind the big window. I put the birdbath out yesterday, as finches love water.

These are two male "house finches" - purple finches are red all over their bodies, not just their heads and other spots.

Ed caught sight of a male goldfinch checking the feeders out from the trees by the creek today, but he didn't come over . . . yet . . .

Derrick and I have both seen what we think is a blue heron flying away after fishing in the creek. We never see him before he sees us and off he goes! The creek (actually a long stagnant pond!) is densely lined with trees and shrubs, so it's hard to see down there without making a racket.

We also don't have any pollination on our sunflowers, so no seeds. Another set of sunflowers should be up shortly and I'll hand-pollinate them if necessary.

At the other place it took a couple of years to get a steady attraction of birds and pollinating bugs.

I wonder if they found other feeders nearby? I will bet they did.
