Fort Adams, Newport, RI: View of "back" side of tenaille (side facing the defenders). The tenaille's casemate was deliberately left open toward the fort; if the tenaille had been captured by attackers, they would have been exposed to fire from fort's outer defense works immediately behind it. Fort Adams is the only American seacoast fortification with tenailles. |
