Tex Williams, from his later years. I can see him selling this LP stageside after a gig, cheerfully dispensing with autographs before ambling over to the bar for some house whiskey. The recording quality here is homespun and Tex's voice is kinda shot from what I'm assuming to be the smoke and drink. He did after all pen the mighty "Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette" after taking over Spade Cooley's band (due to Spade's murder charge) so it must've been a rough and tumble crowd, no? "Artistry in Western Swing", not on this record but a Tex Williams production, is a great country swing symphonic affair and worth looking out for. Note the nice rope border on the cover. |
