Mary Margret Dilly, my GGGreat Grandmother and wife of Warick Butcher. About 1919
Mary Dilley was apparently very out spoken! A story tells that when Warwick was captured by Union troops during the Civil War she got down on her knees in the road in front of the Unoin soldiers and prayed for them to go to hell. Another was that when union soldiers came by to steal what little they had (on the farm) she was on her knees and they asked her what she was doing, she told them that she was calling down to hell to see if there was room for more Union soldiers. Warwick enlisted in Co C 19th VA Cavalry (CSA) March 13, 1863. He was captured by Home Guards in Nicholas County WV July 29, 1863 and was sent to Anthenum prison. He was described as 5' 10" tall, age 44, with dark hair and whiskers and blue eyes. He was sent to Camp Chase at Columbus, OH September 17, 1863. He was sent to Rock Island Prison at Rock Island, IL January 14, 1864. He died of tuberculosis at Rock Island Prison December 3, 1864 and is buried in grave #1637 in the Rock Island Prison Cemetery. |
