On Saturday, my wife and I adopted Rita through a group in the northwest called "Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue". Rita's story is that she was rescued from an abusive environment where she spent approximately her first 15 months of life in an airline style animal crate in her own filth. All of the hair below about her ribcage was missing because she had chewed/scratched it off due to flea infestation and having to live in her own filth. When she barked her mentally ill owner would kick and roll the crate over.
The hand seen in the picture is the hand of the German Shepherd Dog trainer that worked with her from the time the humane society rescued her to last Saturday when my wife and I adopted her. He and his wife are magnificent people and are held in high esteem by my wife and I for the work that they do to rehabilitate abused/rescued animals. The trainer (who I will not name here simply due to respecting his privacy) worked with Rita (gave her the name too since she didn't even have a name previously) for 6 months. In his care, Rita has become the healthy dog you see in these pictures. She is still wary of new people and situations due to her history but has bonded to my wife and I like glue. She is a wonderful family dog and best of all, she puts up with our Pomeranian, Jupiter. (I know you've seen pics of him...;P )
As I'm sure you expect...you will be seeing many more pictures of Rita in the future. |
