My first firehouse Engine 98.. Located at 202 E. Chicago. In 1970 one man had to stand on the back step when on a run just in case something fell off. He could stop the rig and retrieve the item. The problem was I was the young man on the shift and it was I that stood on it. When ever we changed quarters to Engine 83 way up on the north side we take North Lake shore Drive. Going over fifty on a bouncy fire engine and hanging on with just your hands was a thrilling ride to say the least. Today all personal are required to ride inside the cab with seat belts on. That ride on very cold days during the winter was a lot of fun. Picture taken in 1970 |
