"The Christ Child as Shepherd"
by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo Spanish, Seville, 1675 - 1680
quote for this beautiful painting:
REV 7:15-17 (NAB) "For this reason they stand before God's throne and worship him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. "They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. "For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, 9 and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
Not a good photo, sorry. It's such a great print! (Colors are wrong, can't find it on the web.)
Re the artist: "Known and admired for his idealized portrayals of children, Murillo often drew and painted scenes of the infancy of Christ, here identified by a shepherd’s staff. This attribute also identifies the source of the subject, a passage in the Gospel of Saint John: "I am the good shepherd who gives his life for his sheep." from my calendar from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate at Our Lady of the Snows in Illinois
An OMI priest (from the Irish province)who served in South Africa was my first retreat priest, what a marvelous man. He was on a year's sabbatical to study at the GTU in Berkeley (CA). He retirned to South Africa afterward.
Fr. Tony Abbot, you are still in my prayers, wherever you are.
