Spring storm hits hills

Snow and rain occurred fell throughout most of the day Thursday and was expected to continue through Thursday night in Rapid City and other areas of the Black Hills, according to National Weather Service hydrologist Melissa Smith.

A winter weather advisory was in effect Thursday and was expected to last until Friday about 6 p.m., Smith said.

She said about 2 to 4 inches of snow were expected to accumulate in Rapid City, Hermosa, Sturgis, Hot Springs and Edgemont -- areas that had winds of about 25 mph to 40 mph.

Areas in the Northern Hills were expected to receive about 5 to 8 inches of snow, with totals of 6-12 inches near the Wyoming border.

Smith said the storm was caused by a “strong low-pressure system.”

“Strong low-pressure systems tend to create hazardous weather around the area when combined with moisture,” she said.

She said a high wind warning was issued for eastern Pennington County, where winds gusted between 35 mph and 45 mph, with gusts of up to 60 mph.

Capt. Randy Hartley of the South Dakota Highway Patrol said there were at least four injury accidents and 14 noninjury accidents caused by the weather, although none of them appeared to be serious.

Also, the Lead-Deadwood school district dismissed two hours early, and after-school activities in Rapid City were canceled or postponed. The Bauer Invitational Track Meet scheduled for Saturday at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City also has been canceled due to the possibility of continued inclement weather conditions. It has not yet been rescheduled.

Smith said that the weather should improve over the weekend, with temperatures reaching highs in the 50s on Saturday and Sunday with less wind.

An estimated 1.2 inches of snow fell at the NWS office Thursday, with 2 inches in Deadwood and 3.5 inches in Edgemont.

The National Weather Service had no other snow totals.
