This beautiful horse's head is by a local artist, John Lopez, who usually casts in bronze.
For a change, he decided to use some scrap metal from his uncle's farm . . . this is the result!
from his website: "This half life-size horse head is fabricated out of old nuts, bolts and chains [and the end of a fork or spoon, one spur, a wrench, etc etc etc!!] found on John's uncle Geno's ranch. This is new direction for John and his style of sculpting."
He has also done an eagle's head.
This photo appeared on the cover of a horse magazine for our region; I rephotographed it and edited it some to minimize the "noise" from the cover.
Here is some of his bio from his website: "John Lopez, artist and sculptor, [born 1971] grew up on a horse and cattle ranch west of the Missouri River in South Dakota. He continues to take an active role in the Lopez, Hunt, Meyer Quarter Horse Production Sale held each August. He grew up on a ranch where he learned to work cattle and horse only one way . . . Dad's way. The Lopez family has been raising top notch horses for the past four generations. This family heritage has given John a passion for sculpting horses."
See this sculptor and more of his works at http://www.lopez-ranch.com/
He doesn't just do horses, check out the half-size calf roping cowboy and calf (of a real local rodeo star), and just ONE the Presidents he did for Rapid City's series of Presidents in bronze (one at each corner of each downtown intersection) - he is one of only four sculptors working on the project.
