Keith in the Santa Cruz years . . .
A letter came from one of his school buddies today . . .
"Keith and I were pretty good friends at Santa Cruz High in my 9th/10th grade years 1964-to early 65. We would sit out in front of the school for lunch every day at the bottom town-side of the wall above the sidewalk there (Gave Keith a quick getaway on those many days he cut school).
"We got to talk many hours about life....the insanity of things....
"He turned me on to wearing Clarks Desert Boots...( I think he was the first person I ever saw wear them)- He said something like.. 'I decided to free my feet....other people wear their shoes just because their friends wear those kinds....I wear mine because they are the only ones truly comfortable.......and they're Bohemian.....and that's what I am....a Bohemian......'
"He tought me a lot about the importance of Poetry, an open mind, the 'Hip Pocket Book Store' (a store in Santa Cruz), and not taking any of the 'rules' people tried to put on us....very seriously.
"He was the teacher, Mrs. Fitzsimons'....favorite student...even though he often didn't come to class.....His interesting and intelligent comment to her questions are what I think won her over. (Besides his great smile....He did have the greatest smile didn't he...)
"I miss him terribly.....he was one of the most sincere and giving communicators I have ever met....he REALLY cared about my opinion and personhood...even though we often disagreed about stuff...
"I often wonder what a world would have been like....if it had been made up of a bunch of Keiths.....
"He really was ahead of his time....ahead of the Beatles....ahead of the new political enlightenment.......more personal and truthful than the sometimes self-centered drug-folks I got involved with when I later moved to Colorado in 1966...(where I met my later to be wife - in High School there) ... "If a person was a friend of Keith's .... that person was a lavished person indeed.... 5 minutes talking to Keith was worth a day of talking to anyone else....
"Without having known him....and been able to bounce my ideas around him..at a crucial time of life (my father had just died of cancer a year earlier......I don't think I would have ended up with the same abilities/goals/or courage....that Keith helped foster.....
"I remember the deepness of his saddened eyes when I told him about my loved Dad who died...it was almost like he was a brother...the way his empathy was so intense, as you know....
"He was a staggeringly 'Real Person'.....One of the most 'Really There individuals I have ever meet...
"Yes, - I loved my friend, and would covet anything you could fill me in with about Keith....in that I had to move away from the area after my father's death....
"I remember the despair of realizing I would probably never get to see my good friend again..don't think I've ever quite got over it.....
"Glad to be in touch with you, Steve Santa Barbara, CA"
