Night shot of the creek - 4 second exp. handheld
This creek was COMPLETELY DRY before today.
This water is racing and about 3 feet deep from what we can tell in the dark.
The storm happened hours ago and the creek is still running - fast.
This was NOT forecast, just ordinary afternoon thunderstorms.
The water accumulation was incredible - in minutes we had water to my ankles in the courtyard and when the hail stopped it came down HARDER! We also have abnout an inch of water in the basement.
Then we had really loud thunder and one lightning strike was very close . . .
The best local weathercaster said this was indeed extremely unusual. I have experienced this in the Sierra Nevada but not out here on the plains!
Rapid City didn't get even a touch of this, just a bit of rain later on.
The storm was localized here in Box Elder. It came from the north without warning; Ellsworth AFB clocked 80 MPH winds, they are about 1-2 miles directly north of us.
Everybody's fine though. People on the road had to pull over for quite awhile - zero visibility!
The horses hated it - well Dakota did. Copenhagen kept parking himself then Dakota would run off and he would go after him. I tried to catch Cope to bring him into the (HUGE) garage;(I got soaked to the skin in seconds, I had a hard helmet on too!) and Cope would not leave Dakota.
The dogs and cats weren't too crazy about the NOISE - I put on some harp music once the hail stopped and they calmed down.
We have a conventional roof and the noise was just unbvelieveably loud - Derrick and I had to yell at each other!
Welcome to [western] South Dakota! Where YA JUST NEVER KNOW about the weather!
Wondering what I'm talking about? read TWO PREVIOUS captions . . .
