Chadron, NE Fire Update (Chadron is a border town south od here, there is a NE state college there as well)
Wildfire destroys 3 homes in Chadron; firefighters in for long battle
Posted: July 30, 2006 08:37 AM MDT
At least three Chadron homes are destroyed and at least three others are damaged by one of the six wildfires burning in the [Nebraska] Panhandle this weekend.
Some 700 firefighters were battling the fires, which have scorched more than 40,000 acres and continue to be fueled by triple-digit temperatures, low humidity and 20-mile-per-hour winds.
Officials say that other than a few firefighters suffering heat exhaustion, there have been no injuries reported.
Governor Dave Heineman said that as difficult as the situation is, it could be a lot worse. Heineman visited Chadron Saturday after 1,200 people evacuated their homes and firefighters successfully defended the Chadron State College campus.
A subdivision on the south side of Chadron was briefly evacuated again Saturday.
Marc Mullenix is the federal incident commander for the three Dawes County fires near Chadron. He said it could be two to three weeks before the fires are completely extinguished.
