Chipmunk!
NOPE! UPDATE!
It's a "thirteen-striped ground squirrel!"
"Spermophilus tridecemlineatus
"The thirteen-lined ground squirrel can be found in most areas of N. America. It is omnivorous: besides seeds and vegetables it also eats caterpilars, insects, and even small birds, when it gets the chance."
This was too cute to save to post later - Ed had seen this teeny guy but I hadn't.
I KNEW something was "rearranging" the stones under the birdbath, but this is the first time I have seen him/her!
To tell you how small this guy is, that is a SUNFLOWER seed he's busy eating! A SMALL one!
The round mushroom thing at his feet is maybe 2 inches max!
(I think it's a female, I have a picture of it standing up and there's no, yanno, there!)
After I took this, a second one came along, and they started to play - rolling on the grass like little puppies!
Thank goodness it's a ground squirrel - it won't go after the feeders! (plus I always have seed on the ground for ground, non-perching birds)
Info is from a site by Harry Foundalis, a Greek who studies at Indiana University!
"I am a Greek from Macedonia who studies in the United States, with a Chinese wife from Taiwan who lives in Australia!"
