Gifts from my husband . . .
We donate to charity a lot.
One of our favorites are the Oblates of Mary who work all over the world with the poorest people on earth. They have a lovely Shrine in Belleville, Ill., not far from Chicago.
For certain donations one receives a special "offering gift". Ed bought these for me: a hand made crucifix and a hand made, painted glass bead rosary with an ornate crucifix.
For those who wonder, why do Catholics (especially Roman and Orthodox) always show the Crucificxion on their crosses?
Because to Catholics, the Hour of Jesus's death is the "Hour of Divine Mercy". In dying, He fulfilled His mission on earth, to cleanse the "original sin" of Eve and Adam in Paradise. And so, we always have the Crucifix to remind us that we too shall die, but this time, in His arms because of His great gift to us.
For many Protestants, the use of the plain cross exemplifies the Resurrection, which symbolizes the BRAND NEW COVENENANT of hope of life after death (which the Jewish people did not believe in until the Coming of the Messiah, for whom they still wait).
So, both crosses are correct.
In today's ecumenical times, the Catholicm "celebration" of the Stations oif the Cross often include the so-called "15th Station", the Resurrection!
By rising from the dead, Jesus Christ proved to man that He was what He had claimed, the "I Am Who Am" in human/divine form.
The Rosary, whose first origins are shrouded in mystery, in its present form was discovered and promulgated by St. Dominic and his order, the Dominican Order (or O.P., Order of Preachers), is by tradition a series of prayers asking the Mother of God to pray for us while, at the same time, we meditate on the life of Her Son.
What many people do not know is that the Rosary beads can be used to pray ANY cycle of prayers. The so-called "worry beads" of the Orthodox Catholics are very similar in their intent, although the prayers are not the same.
The Rosary is commonly considered a "Catholic" thing, but it need not be so. I began praying it long before I converted!
