During the depression in the 30's men had to leave the cities to try and find work on the farms.They carried all their belongings on their back and walked from farm to farm asking for food and work. If they couldn't get it given to them some would steal a sheep now and then to survive. The song "Once a Jolly Swagman" (Waltzing Matilda) which is not (but should be) our national anthem describes the essence of the Australian character.
